Our First Death Café in Maine

By Nancy McAlley

At our first Death Café in Maine there were 7 people ranging in age from 30’s to 60’s. It was exciting to be able to host the café and provide a forum where conversation about issues surrounding death, was acceptable.

We had a great setting in a beautiful rug hooking studio with comfortable couches, tables and chairs. Tea, coffee and cookies were offered for the pleasure of those who were attending.

Discussion started with an introduction of each person attending and their interest in the Death Café.

· We discussed Dying with Dignity and what that means to people as well as thoughts on how that may be accomplished

· We talked about different experiences we each have encountered with loved ones dying

· Discussion was initiated about the Hemlock Society

· There was discussion around the issue of suicide and mental pain vs physical pain

Everyone had a great evening and we are hoping for even more attendance in the future.

Our next Death Café is scheduled for February 21st at the same place. (6.30 - 8.30pm, 9 Field Street, Suite 340, Belfast, Maine )

  1. I'm so excited about these Death Cafes. I'm sorting out how to hold a few in the Puget Sound Washington area. Stay tuned!
