Amazing work - Down To Earth

Down to Earth is a community bereavement project delivered by award-winning anti-poverty east London charity QSA. Our service is volunteer mentor led and we support people living on low incomes to arrange meaningful, cost effective funerals. Since our project opened in 2010 our team of trained volunteer funeral mentors have:
  • guided and supported 300 people to plan meaningful funerals with reduced cost and distress
  • saved clients an average of £1,000 on their funeral bill
  • secured grants, benefits and awards of over £100,000

I am so glad they were there – I don’t know what I would have done without them.”

What we do
We welcome referrals of anyone who is likely to struggle to pay for a funeral, now or in the future. This includes the recently bereaved, people receiving end of life care, carers or older people. We match people with trained mentors who help guide people through the funeral planning process. Our team can:
o   Provide information and guidance on how to plan a meaningful, cost effective funeral

o   Support good consumer activities and sound decision making
o   Handle negotiations between family members, funeral directors and other agencies
o   Ensure clients can plan meaningful funerals within a realistic budget
o   Support applications for financial support from the social fund and other trust funds
Referral criteria
Our service is for people on low incomes or in receipt of benefits who are struggling to meet the costs of paying for a funeral.
We'd be really grateful if you could share this information with colleagues and your networks.
