Hello everyone, Jon had asked me to say a few words about me. Not always easy. But I’ll give it a go. I’m Kathie Conn, my path to death came about many years ago. In 2003 I had the privilege of being present when my mother in-law Irene died. Witnessing her death and seeing how it affected my in-laws was an eye opener. One of the aspects of this process was watching my husband’s family struggling with to her dying. I felt they had not been prepared for the process or for the death. It was very painful for me to watch. I wanted to learn how to bring comfort to those going thru the process if dying. In 2005 I completed my certification with the Celebrant Foundation as an End of Life Healing & Transition Celebrant. I went on to become certified in the Art of Pastoral Care in 2009. I wanted to be able to help others understand the process of death; to bring compassion and comfort, to ease the fear and difficulty so many experience. I came to a place where I felt our society can’t speak about death. We don’t look at death as the end celebration of life. Within my spiritual beliefs all life passages are cyclical, the wheel of life turns and with each turn there’s a new beginning. I am so grateful to the Celebrant Foundation and Jon’s work with introducing the concepts of the Death Café. This process and format is just what folks need to find their voice and speak to the mystery of Death. I’m very proud to be a part of this worldwide movement with so many likeminded people. I’ve been waiting for this door to open and here it is, I’ll let you all know how the first Death Café in Northern Virginia turns out on May 22nd, Enjoy this day because there won’t be another today
