Harmful and unnecessary taboos around death
in our culture have separated us from meaningful dying, not to mention fully
living. The Jacksonville café is intended to be an open, respectful and
confidential space free from discrimination where people can share and explore
ideas that will challenge and improve fears we hold around death. The
Jacksonville Death Café will offer refreshments along with guided, yet
free-flowing conversation and activities at the monthly meetings.
Death Cafes are free of charge, and cash
donations are encouraged to cover the cost of refreshments, support materials
and our rental donation to Unity Church.
The idea of running Death Cafes came out
of the work of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz. Londoner Jon Underwood read
about Crettaz’s work in late 2010 and immediately led his first café. Today, he
supports the global, non-profit
Death Cafes as part of a larger outreach initiative called “Impermanence” -- a
set of projects including consumer funeral support and other activities. http://www.deathcafe.com/p/what-is-death-cafe.html
