The Long Weekend of Death in London

A year ago in London the Southbank Centre held a 3-day Festival of Death for the Living slap bang in the centre of London. This was a groundbreaking and joyful event which gave people the opportunity to come together and investigate death gently and creatively.

Death Cafe was there and it was surreal. We went from running Death Cafes in the dining room of my house to running them in the Royal Festival Hall in Central London! We ran 6 Death Cafes over the weekend and they were all memorable.

So it's great news that this festival of death doesn't seem to be a one-time thing. "It's like we've organised our own death festival" says Carla Conte who has organised the Graveland exhibition that opens on Thursday. Carla is being generous - she's done all the organising!

But the result, by chance or not, is a weekend of treats for the discerning death-head living in or able to get to London. Your itinerary is as follows:

  • Graveland exhibition - Tuesday 29th January - Sunday 3rd February with and opening event on Thursday 31st January
  • 50th Death Cafe - This weekend we will have held 50 Death Cafes! Our 50th will take place at Graveland on Saturday 2nd from 3 - 5pm.   This will be facilitated by Sue Barsky Reid who also facilitated our first Death Cafe
  • Filmed Death Cafe - Josefine Speyer, co-founder of the Natural Death Centre, and Sophie Marsden have organised a Death Cafe which will be filmed as part of Sophie's final year project. This will run on Sunday 3rd from 2.30 - 5pm in North West London. Please do attend if you're happy talking about death on the record
  • Death Jam - If after a weekend of death you still want more, we would recommend attending Els Merry Price's new event which will mix presentations with conversation.  This will take place in Islington on Monday 4th Feb.

  1. Oh how I wish I could be there! But it's a long way from Seattle.

    1. Dear Kateyanne, Have you got a Death Cafe in Seattle? If not, why not set one up? It is OK to start small. Find out how to do it from the Death Cafe website. Wishing you good luck!
